The DANISH government reiterated its
support to Bhutan's judicial system with the signing
of a Nu 16 million project, on September 12, in Thimphu.
The agreement was signed between the
counsellor, resident coordinator, Liaison Office of
Denmark, Dr. Michael Vinding and the director general,
department of aid and debt management, Aum Yangki. T.
Wangchuk.
The three year project will strengthen
the Phuntsholing court with the construction of a fully
furnished 23,000 square feet court building for two
judges, staff, and legal council.
Speaking at the signing, Dr. Vinding
said the Danish assistance to judiciary in Bhutan had
covered areas with regard to technical, training, advisory
and had supplied equipment but the last thing that was
lacking was physical infrastructure.
"To deliver fair and speedy justice,
a viable environment is necessary," he said.
He said that the project will hopefully
help to speed up the number of cases being handled and
the people would have their privacy which was a part
of human right.
"The building will be yet another
example of traditional Bhutanese architecture,"
he said.
The Chief Justice, Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye,
expressed deep appreciation to the Danish government
for having rendered 'comprehensive assistance' to the
Bhutanese judiciary.
"It will have tremendous effect
on the Bhutanese people and they will appreciate the
assistance in years to come," he said.
The Chief Justice also thanked the
Danish government in rendering assistance in the form
of trainings, investment of human resources and in harnessing
technologies for fast and effective practice of noble
edifice of justice.
"This embodies an expression of
friendship between the two governments and countries,"
he said. "The new court at Phuntsholing will be
a good marriage of the past and the present."
The director general of Department
Aid and Debt Management, Aum Yanki. T. Wangchuk expressed
appreciation for the first Danish project to the judiciary
in terms of development in the physical infrastructure.
The Liaison Office of Denmark has in
the last 8 years provided Nu 43.3 million to the Royal
Court of Justice.
