Judiciary Conference begins
The 10th Annual Judiciary Conference which began in Thimphu yesterday will look at the Land Act, Marriage Act, Theft and Burglary Act, Murder Act, and the anti-National Act to clarify all doubts regarding their implementation and make necessary modifications.

Opening the conference at the High Court yesterday, the Finance Minister, Lyonpo D. Tshering, said that law and order is the essence of peace and harmony in the country. He also pointed out that while most of the basic problems of the people are decreasing, steps must be taken to ensure that the stronger members of society do not take advantage of the weaker people.

In his briefing to the participants, High Court Judge, Dasho Sangay Dorji, said that the legal system in Bhutan was first introduced by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who came to the Kingdom in the 16th century.

The country’s independent judiciary authority, he said, was set up in 1961, and the High Court was established in 1968.

The Conference is attended by a total of 30 High Court judges, Dzongkhag Thrimpons, Dungthrims and Thrimrabs.
